I decided for my change, I was going to create something to show my hesitations towards going to college. I'm going to make a clay book and carve a chameleon to make it look like it's coming out of the book.
I made a clay model to make it easier to carve out of stone.
I drew on the stone before carving to ensure I wouldn't completely ruin it.
Next came shaping. The stone was uneven from the beginning so I had to try and make it look symmetrical on each side.
After I was done with that, I gave this little guy a bath.
The eyes aren't quite even, but chameleon's have wonky eyes, so it fits.
The easy part was making the book. Now onto the hard part. :-)
The pre-carved alabaster.
Once I carved all the excess off, it got a lot harder and I had to be more careful.
I then sanded it down with 120 and 400 grit sandpaper.
There are still some scratches but I'm really impressed with the outcome.
From beginning to end.
I made an indention for the chameleon to sit in, and I pit fired the book.
I painted a tail on the book to make it seem like it's coming out of it and then sprayed polyurethane on it to bring out the burned look.
I don't really like how the painted tail turned out but I really like the alabaster.
